Written by CBSLA.com
MORENO VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — A 15-year-old girl who was left in a coma after she was hit by a classmate's pickup truck outside of Hemet High School last year was able to recover with the help of an unlikely hero.

Helen Richardson and seven others were walking in a crosswalk on Stetson Avenue around 2 p.m. on May 30, 2012, when 18-year-old Daniel Carrillo reportedly ran a red light and struck the students.

Trisha Telezinski, Helen's mother, was devastated when she got the call that her daughter was among the victims and was being transported to Riverside County Regional Medical Center with severe head injuries.

Scrub Patrol: A Novel Approach to Hand Hygiene Monitoring

With the goal of reducing healthcare-associated infections, RCRMC began a hand hygiene improvement program in April 2011. Led by an infection preventionist and a medical fellow, the program included a multifaceted staff education campaign, including staff trainings, a promotional video, and signage in the inpatient units.

In order to ensure that the educational efforts had a lasting effect, the medical fellow recruited and trained a group of hospital volunteers called the "Scrub Patrol" to directly observe and collect data on hand hygiene compliance. From April to September 2011, the volunteers used Apple iPods and an iScrub application as a standardized tool to collect between 3,000 and 8,000 observations per week. After a few months of observation, the team was trained to perform "just in time education" for staff, resulting in rewards to compliant workers and "friendly reminder tickets" to staff that needed further education.

RCRMC Receives a Hospital Safety Score “A” rating PDF Print E-mail
s-result-imgaMore than 2,600 general hospitals receive a Hospital Safety Score. The Hospital Safety Score uses data that is publicly reported on a national level. The intent of the safety score is to provide transparency in hospital reporting for the publicly reported safety measures and to build community confidence and foster commitment to those served by the hospital.

As a result of the hard work and dedication from the staff, RCRMC received the highest possible grade...an 'A'.

The hospital safety score is one piece of information that a patient may use when planning a hospital stay. These safety measures include some of the very basic principles of medical care.

The hospital safety score uses the national performance measures from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Hospital Association (AHA) survey, CMS, and the Leapfrog Hospital Survey to produce a score that represents the hospital's overall performance in patient safety measures for preventing harm and medical errors. There are two types of measures; 1) process/structural measures, and 2) outcome measures.
