REGION: Health fair highlights innovations

Riverside County Regional Medical Center’s first annual Health Innovations Fair was held Thursday, March 12.

To make health care accessible to residents across the county, the regional medical center, located in Moreno Valley, has a mobile health clinic housed in a a 40-foot van. It makes regular monthly visits to underserved communities to provide medical services to those who don't have health insurance or transportation.

Riverside County Supervisor Marion Ashley touted the hospital’s national recognition as a stroke intervention center of excellence and its success in treating and curing hepatitis C.

“Just a couple of years ago, few imagined we could cure hepatitis C,” Ashley said. “Now we’re ... sparing our patients from the consequences of this debilitating, chronic disease, like liver transplants and possible death.”

Other programs make phone calls to patients who have been released from the hospital to make sure they are continuing to recover at home and provide free services at home or by phone to people who have asthma.

“There’s been a change in the paradigm from providing reactive sick care to providing proactive preventive and community care,” Leung said. “If we can encourage health in a seamless way, we will leave a legacy of healthy lives.”
